There are a number of apps and internet resources that I use on a regular basis for birding, photography, trip planning, and all my other outdoor interests. You can find my faviourite resources below.

Birding

Merlin Bird ID - A great phone app by Cornell University for identifying birds by sound or a variety of other ways.

eBird - A public database of bird observations around the globe. Useful for finding what birds may be present at a given location.

Photography

Wildlife Toolkit - A toolkit for Adobe Lightroom created by Will Goodlet that uses presets to create a structured but still fully custom editing workflow.

Trip Planning

Campnab - A useful service for getting notified when campsites become available. Great for booking last minute trips that have limited site availability.

Google My Maps - Google tool for creating custom maps which is useful for drawing routes and defining points of interest (campsites, rapids, portages, etc.). Maps can be exported as KML/KMZ which can then be converted to GPX with a third party tool and imported to a handheld GPS for navigation while on a trip.

Ontario Crown Land Use Policy Atlas - Ontario Government provided tool for reviewing details of crown land across the province. Complex tool but a good resource if planning a trip that goes through crown land that isn’t well documented.

Paddling

RiverApp - Useful phone app for monitoring river flows/levels. Much more convenient than looking at poorly formatted government charts.
